Born in 1963 into a large, loving family, Roland has a clubfoot that prevents him from standing upright, and his mother, Esther, does not want to recognize it. Despite formal medical advice, Esther is convinced that her son will walk like other children and refuses to have him fitted with an orthopedic device. She prays to all the saints for a miracle. Deceptions and miracles punctuate little Roland's early years.
