Workshop around Hijikata Tatsumi’s words “Sickened Dance Princess”
by Yuko Kominami
“I let my elder sister live in my body. When I am absorbed in creating a dance, she tears offdarkness within my body and devours it more than she needs; when she stands up in my body, Isit down automatically; when I fall, she falls….” (Being jealous of dog’s veins)
The workshop delves into the founder of butoh Tatsumi Hijikata’s words, which is at the sametime butoh-scores. We will explore how his words and images are used by deconstructingestablished language structures – “by incessantly dilating a suffocated passage between meaning and sensing” (Kuniyoshi 2004) – to let appear the extremely concrete and paradoxicalworld of his dance body that senses all and always in metamorphosis.
The workshop consists of experimentation with his text from “Yameru-maihime” (sickened dance princess) and tryingexercising with words from Yukio Waguri’s “Butoh-Kaden” (the noted dance score from Hijikata’srehearsals).
