Thierry Ardouin

The exhibition Graines explores the issues of diversity and questions our relationship with origins. The fascinating formal beauty of seeds, revealed through the photographs of Thierry Ardouin, will be presented in an exhibition designed by the Atelier EXB in collaboration with neimënster.

The seed is a marvel in appearance, a perfection of shape and color. It has a morphology that is both necessary and strange, capable of evoking astonishment, questioning, or contemplation. Carefully selected, illuminated, and framed, the seeds photographed by Thierry Ardouin disrupt our subjectivity as viewers: they become symbols that, far from being generic images, challenge our connection to origin. From the emergence of agriculture over 10,000 years ago to the issues raised by current hybrid seeds, through the discovery of seed uses across cultures and eras, the book Histoires de graines explores the challenges of diversity. Most of these wild or cultivated seeds, originating from collections at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, fascinate with their formal beauty: colors, textures, shapes, and appearances, they captivate the eye and challenge our perceptions. Texts by Marion Chartier, Charlotte Fauve, Gilles Clément, Serge Bahuchet, and José-Manuel Gonçalvès accompany the photographic work of Thierry Ardouin.

Born in 1961, Thierry Ardouin is co-founder of the Tendance floue collective. He works on the links between the human being and his environment, favouring medium- and large-format prints that encourage attention to time and composition. In 2004, his Nada series, which began in Spain, looked at the traces left by the hand of humankind on landscapes, and, the sometimes accidental, transformation of these landscapes. In Terres paysannes, in 2008, he looked for the gestures of farmers, the back-and-forth between tools and land, and the constant balancing act between nature and culture. With Histoires de graines, his work on the infinitesimal nature of seeds reveals an unsuspected nature and questions man’s profound disconnection from his environment.
