The UNESCO Landscape of Luxembourg: "Champion and Leader of Historic Cities"
Guided Tour with Dr. Robert L. Philippart, historian and former UNESCO Site Manager during the event "Lëtzebuerg, dat ass Vakanz" at Place d'Armes.
The old quarters and fortifications of Luxembourg have been listed as a World Heritage site for 30 years. At the end of October 2024, UNESCO recognized "Luxembourg Old Quarters and Fortifications" as "Champion and Leader of Historic Cities" for its sustainable management of the historic urban landscape. The tour-conference will allow participants to discover the perimeter of UNESCO's international protection, the criteria for this protection, and their implementation. The tour will explain the choices made for public space planning, lighting, requirements for the protection of built heritage, preparation for climate change, as well as the importance of natural and intangible heritage to ensure the protection of the historic urban landscape as a whole. The tour will pass through the UNESCO Visitor Center (Lëtzebuerg City Museum) and visit the "Luxembourg Rose Memorial" at the Rondelles, which houses an important archaeological crypt soon to be accessible to the public.
