The Column of Jupiter is a widespread regional monument expressing popular religious beliefs. In general, the column consists of three superimposed elements: the base takes the form of a ‘stone with four divinities’, bearing bas-reliefs most often representing Juno, Minerva, Hercules and Mercury. Above this base is usually an octagonal pedestal depicting the seven deities of the week and an additional god. The column itself, which rests on the octagonal plinth, is often decorated with scales and ends in a capital. It is surmounted by a sculpted group representing Jupiter overcoming a giant. These columns were erected in honour of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, the celestial god, to invoke his protection for the well-being of the family and the estate. Numerous elements of Jupiter columns have been found in Luxembourg. The Column of Jupiter
