Insight into the work of the platform Music and Gender in Luxembourg
On 24 November, the birthday of composer Helen Buchholtz (1877-1953), the MuGi.lu research group invites you to celebrate this occasion with a program combining music, research and a convivial moment around a birthday cake.
Under the title "Fremde Freundinnen. Clara Schumann und Pauline Viardot", Beatrix Borchard (em. Professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg) will tell the story of the friendship of these two exceptional composers - German and French - represented by actresses Monique Hartmann and Corina Ostafi. Their lieder and melodies will be performed by Noémie Sunnen (soprano) and Tatsiana Molakava (piano).
The MuGi.lu team will then present the current state of its research on Luxembourgish female musicians. MuGi.lu is a project initiated in 2022 by the CID | Fraen an Gender and the University of Luxembourg which aims to study the history of music from a gender perspective.
The afternoon will end with a piano recital by Béatrice Rauchs (piano professor at the Conservatoire de Musique de la Ville de Luxembourg) with pieces of music by Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Helen Buchholtz, Tatsiana Zelianko and Nigji Sanges.
MuGi.lu cooperates with the Centre national de l'audiovisuel, the Centre national de littérature, the City of Luxembourg and – for this occasion – with the Master "Theaterwissenschaft und Interkulturalität" at the University of Luxembourg. The project is supported by the Sommer Foundation and the Loutsch-Weydert Foundation as well as by private donations.
