Contemporary Art Gallery “Am Tunnel”
Where? 16, rue Ste Zithe, L-2763 Luxembourg City
The meeting place for art lovers 15 metres underground
In 1987, Spuerkeess decides to dig a tunnel to link the Bank's various buildings located on the Plateau Bourbon. Very soon, the idea of transforming the tunnel into an art gallery took shape. The works required to create the gallery were carried out between 1992 and 1993 and the first exhibition was shown in 1994.
The tunnel is 15 metres underground and is some 350 metres long. The main part is occupied by the Contemporary Art Gallery “Am Tunnel” and allows Spuerkeess to organise temporary exhibitions comprising works by both internationally renowned artists and lesser-known talents. The remaining part of the tunnel is dedicated to the world-famous photographer Edward Steichen, particularly renowned for his exhibitions' "The Family of Man" and "The Bitter Years". The Edward Steichen Space hosts a permanent exhibition displaying part of the artist's significant body of work.
