Natura 2000 area - Region of Mompach, Manternach, Bech and Osweiler

Around the villages of Manternach, Bech, Osweiler, Mompach and Herborn there are two flora and fauna habitats and a bird protection zone, making the 5,591 ha area the largest conservation area in the Mullerthal Region - Luxembourg's Little Switzerland.

Most of the area is occupied by the bird protection area of Mompach, Manternach, Bech and Osweiler. The Keuper landscape shapes the area, which differs from very marked to less marked area to deciduous forests on the tops.
Bird species such as the red and black kite and the black stork find an ideal environment in the woods for resting and breeding.

This is also the border between the bird protection zone and the Natura 2000 area of Herborn - Herborner Wald / Echternach - Haard. The northern part of the Natura 2000 area belongs to the sandstone massif of the Mullerthal Region. The northern part of the bird protection zone is characterized by the Luxembourg sandstone, which offers the ideal habitat for predatory shrike or red-backed shrike thanks to its border, covered with hedges, meadows, juniper heaths, orchards and semi-dry grasslands.

To the south, the area borders the Syrtal area, which lies between Manternach and the Fielsmillen. Remarkable for this part are the deeply cut gorges, which alternate with floodplain forests and thus offer a fantastic landscape.
