Description

Hike accross a nature reserve on the Auto-pédestre trail Kayl.

The path leads at first easy-going along the cycle path through the forest. This is followed by a somewhat more athletic ascent to a wider forest path. This forest track let you walk comfortably between tall trees.

Along the way, you won’t only see a lot of greenery, but you will also cross the former open-cast mining area ‘Brommeschbierg’, which is now part of the ‘Léiffrächen’ nature reserve. Here you can see the red mining terraces and how nature is reclaiming this once arid area.

On your way back to your starting point, you will pass the ‘Léiffrächen’, a popular pilgrimage site in Luxembourg. The ‘Léiffrächen’ is the patron saint of miners and mines and she is inextricably linked to the history of mining and miners’ families in Luxembourg. A statue of Our Lady of the Miners is housed in a small chapel in a grotto, where pilgrims flock to honour Her.

The National Mining Memorial was built right next to the pilgrimage site to pay tribute to those who lost their lives at work. If you read the inscriptions carefully, you will note that some of the deceased weren’t even 14 years old when they lost their lives…
