Today, Mum, Dad, Mia and I are having a picnic at the Mamer Drëps recreational area. We sit down on a large blanket next to the beautiful pavilion. A stream flows next to us. It isn’t that deep. There are small and large stones in the water. There isn’t a single cloud in the sky. The birds are chirping and the sun is beating down.

“Go and cool your arms with cold water, then you won’t feel so hot,” Mum suggests. Good idea! I look for a nice spot next to the stream. I kneel down next to the pale stone wall and dip my arms into the cold water.

“Mmm, that feels good!” I say with relief. Mia wants to cool down too and comes to sit beside me.

“Emil! Stop it!” she suddenly laughs. “I’ll get my own back!” I’ve just splashed water over Mia. “Just you wait…” she mutters and takes her shoes off. What is my sister up to? She steps into the water cautiously. In the middle of the stream, she stands still, turns around and then splashes me. I’m not letting her get away with that, so I jump into the water too.

After our water fight we splash around for a while. We’re enjoying being able to cool down.

“Hey… what’s that floating on the water there?” I suddenly get quite excited. I can see something gleaming in the stream, but I can’t make out what it is.

“Perhaps it’s a fat, silver fish,” Mia secretly wonders.

I reach into the water as quick as a flash: “It’s a message in a bottle!”

Mia pulls a letter out of the bottle. Quickly we jump out of the stream and sit down on the grass. Mum and Dad are now standing behind my sister. They’re also very curious. Mia opens the letter and reads it out aloud:

We all stare at each other.

“I’ll quickly pack the picnic away,” Dad suggests excitedly. Mum has already got her mobile out and is taking a closer look at the map. Mia and I are ready for an adventure.
