Halifax Memorial “Marscherwald”
Where? L-6240 Graulinster
The Halifax Memorial “Marscherwald” is dedicated to the memory of Royal Air Force (RAF) crews who lost their lives between 1940 and 1945 in planecrashes after being shot down over the Luxembourg territory under German occupation.
The monument, erected in October 2013 on the initiative of a local WWII history studies group is located in the woods not far from the sundial near the rest area “Rippeger Kopp”of Graulinster, where an RAF Halifax MKII bomber crashed on August 28, 1943. The aircraft belonged to the 158th RAF Squadron flying out from Lissett Airfield in Yorkshire to bomb Nürnberg.
The monument consisting of a plaque of native wood partially in the shape of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, has the names of three of the crewmembers who were killed in the crash engraved.
A well-marked trail in the woods with a small parking lot at its entrance leads to the monument, with an adjacent chart with historical narrative and graphics.
