Algerian spahis monument in Lasauvage

Where? rue principale, L-4698 Lasauvage

This monument is dedicated to the Franco-Algerian scout troops who died in the fighting during the attack by Nazi Germany in May 1940

As the III. Reich invaded the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in May 1940 in order to be able to advance further into France and Belgium, the Minett region was occupied by the French army mobile units. There were occasional skirmishes and fighting. A total of 59 soldiers from the 6th Regiment of the Algerian SpaHis, light scout troops, were killed in the area of Pétange, Differdange and Lasauvage. This plaque commemorates their victims. Another plaque also commemorates victims among the civilian population who had to pay with their lives for helping to resist the occupiers.
