Today, Emil and I are visiting Ansembourg Castle’s beautiful gardens with our grandma Tilly.

“Just look at these gorgeous roses,” Grandma Tilly amazes. Emil and I are more interested in gardening. We stand quietly in the large vegetable garden, next to the park, so we can watch the gardener at work.

“Look at the bulbs he’s putting in the ground,” I whisper. The gardener hears us and explains, “They’re going to be onions.” He shows us how he puts the bulbs in the ground. Afterwards, Emil and I make our way back to Grandma Tilly.

Suddenly Emil whispers, “Mia, be quiet!” I close my mouth and listen. Nothing.

“The water has stopped bubbling in the fountain,” Emil says. Which can only mean one thing – a statue is missing!

We run down to the fountain, and the statue of the golden eagle is indeed missing! Instead, there’s a sheet of paper blowing around in the wind. My brother and I jump up to try and grab it.

“Finally!” says Emil after a while. We’re both out of breath. Emil hands me the sheet of paper and I unfold it.

“Hmm… We can use these pieces of puzzles to find the missing eagle!” I say excitedly and explain: “We need to go to the castle courtyard. Come on let’s go!”

In the castle courtyard, I read the first piece of puzzle aloud.

Emil and I look around the courtyard.

“I’ve got it!” exclaims Emil excitedly and tells me the answer. He is right! The next puzzle takes us into the garden. I grab Emil’s hand and off we run.

We even run through the maze twice and always come out in a different part of the garden. What we’re actually looking for is the large plane tree, which is well-hidden at the end of a long tunnel.

Then we look over the edge of a beautiful fountain into the water. Our faces are reflected in the water and we make funny faces at each other.

Once Emil and I have collected all six clues and put the eagle back in its place, we happily run back to Grandma Tilly, who is still smelling the beautiful roses.

“That puzzle was such fun, grandma!” I shout with joy as I jump in the air.

“You both did a great job,” says our grandma with a grin. “Now you’ve really earned that picnic.”

Playground in Hollenfels

In the idyllic village of Hollenfels is a medieval castle, unfortunately it is not open to the public. Next to the castle there’s a fantastic playground in the park which has a beautiful view of the castle.

Walking trail to Reiterlee

The walking trail to Reiterlee takes you to a rock steeped in legend. This legend tells of a man who was being chased on his horse, and who to escape his pursuers, jumped with his horse from the top here. Miraculously, both horse and rider survived the jump.

As well as this story, from the top of these rocks you can enjoy views of the Eisch Valley and the village of Marienthal.
